The companies building the most transformative technology in a generation are also running some of the most expensive operations in corporate history. OpenAI spent approximately $1.69 for every dollar it earned in 2025. Anthropic spent more than $4 for every dollar it earned in 2024. Together, the two leading AI laboratories burned through more than $8.5 billion more than they collected in a single year. This is not dysfunction. It is, by most accounts, a deliberate strategy.

The scale of these losses is not a rounding error or an accounting technicality.
